After many snowy winters, I decided to trade in my life in Toronto, Canada, for sunny Sydney, Australia. You don’t move to the other side of the world not to live by the beach, so I chose to call Bondi Beach home. In Canada, I spent a large part of my year in a down-filled, fur-trimmed parka where function definitely overtook fashion. My first Sydney winter with light layers was a nice welcomed change! Once summer rolled around, the number of swimsuits I owned suddenly skyrocketed and I felt right at home.
Bondi Beach is one of the world’s most iconic beaches, full of backpackers, ex-pats and the occasional Aussie local. It receives around 2.7 million visitors per year, and it is clear to see why. The neighbourhood has undergone some gentrification in the early 2000s and is now a bustling beach town with great restaurants, bars and plenty of surf. The Bondi Markets are a notable point of interest with the Saturday Farmers’ Market and the Sunday market that features unique clothing from emerging designers, handmade accessories, vintage pieces, homewares and anything in between.
Unlike the Northern Hemisphere, white is a thriving neutral in Australia almost year-round, and the little white dress is commonly seen on the streets of Bondi. Sydney, but especially Bondi, can be more of a daytime place as its when most of the action happens. The average resident rises early for morning yoga or F45 class, followed by brunch, beach and plenty of time spent outdoors on the patio from day to evening. The Bucket List is a notable spot to enjoy a cocktail on the beach view and maybe catch a sunset. Dogs welcome!
The architecture of Bondi features a mix of Art Deco with a bit of Spanish Mission style that adds some punches of colour to its urban landscape. A great example of this is Hotel Ravesis with pops of coral pink, which also happens to be an iconic beachfront spot for nightlife, Sunday Sessions and live music.
I’m thoroughly enjoying my new life in Bondi Beach, and I’m sure it will continue to inspire me with the mix of local Australian beach culture with a hint of styles from its international visitors. I will be sure to bring the best fashion trends to Belle & Bloom for every season to come.
